Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to The Highlands in Northern Michigan, a hidden gem surrounded by breathtaking landscapes with Midwestern charm. From thrilling outdoor activities to picturesque views, The Highlands offers a captivating experience that’s waiting to be explored.
The Highlands is situated in Harbor Springs, a charming town in northern Michigan known for its beautiful landscapes, charming downtown, and proximity to Lake Michigan.
Skiing in Northern Michigan
Skiing at The Highlands during the weekdays was absolutely amazing. Opting for the Monday-through-Thursday ski package allowed us to hit the slopes without the crowds, making this trip especially enjoyable. This was our second visit since we discovered the resort in 2025, and just like our first experience, it exceeded all our expectations.
Discovering the Destination
Though we had previously skied in Vermont—where I experienced my first blizzard—we had never really considered Northern Michigan as a skiing destination. The allure of a road trip, combined with the promise of good snow, was too tempting to resist. We swapped out our regular tires for our Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 Run Flat snow tires on our Subaru WRX, packed our gear, and embarked on what was sure to be an exhilarating adventure.

A Warm Welcome Awaits
Upon our return to the resort, we were greeted with the same outstanding service that had impressed us during our first visit. The clean ski-in & ski-out condo provided a comfortable getaway after a long day on the slopes, complete with plenty of everything needed for a relaxing stay—spacious bedrooms, a cozy living area, and a fully equipped kitchen that made it feel like a true retreat.
After a thrilling day on the slopes, we were delighted to discover that the lodge’s restaurant still offered a wonderful menu, allowing us to indulge in hearty meals after hitting the trails. The warm ambiance, coupled with the aroma of freshly prepared dishes, made every dining experience enjoyable.
In the evenings, we gathered around the condo’s fireplace, sharing stories and laughter. The views of the snow-covered slopes from our window were simply breathtaking, reminding us why we fell in love with this destination.

The Joy of the Slopes
Skiing during the week provided us with the unique advantage of avoiding lengthy lift lines, greatly enhancing our experience. We glided down picturesque slopes, surrounded by a breathtaking winter wonderland. The lack of crowds allowed us to fully enjoy our time on the mountain, savoring every moment. It was such a relief not to constantly check for fast-moving skiers behind us, making each run even more pleasurable. With ample space to carve my turns, I truly relished the tranquility of the slopes, pausing occasionally to soak in the stunning views and breathe in the crisp, refreshing air. The fresh powder beneath my skis felt exhilarating, and the serene atmosphere turned each descent into a personal adventure. Having the mountain almost to ourselves added a special magic to the experience. Each run felt like a treasured gift, letting me fully enjoy the joy of skiing without distractions. It was a wonderful escape I won’t soon forget.

Conclusion
Returning to Northern Michigan for another round of skiing really highlighted what a hidden gem it is for winter lovers. The snow conditions were fantastic, the service was top-notch, and the peaceful slopes made everything even more enjoyable. This destination should definitely be on every family’s list, and we can’t wait to go back! Just so you know, Northern Michigan has about five to seven main ski resorts, each with its own unique charm.
